Multiple and serious warnings from the man who will lead the world’s largest democracy in less than two weeks
The president-elect of the United States reinforced several of the ideas he has defended in recent days, implying that he is serious about the many matters that have caused some international uproar.
Firstly, the issues of the Panama Canal and Greenland, territories where Donald Trump admits US military intervention to control these territories, none of which belong to the United States.
“The Panama Canal is a disgrace,” he said, from his mansion in Mar-a-Lago, in which he criticized the recently deceased Jimmy Carter for the agreement made in Panama.
“What happened at the Panama Canal was Jimmy Carter gave it to them for a dollar and they were supposed to treat us well,” he reiterated, suggesting that the United States got a bad deal at the end of the day.
It should be remembered that, during his presidency, Jimmy Carter negotiated treaties that allowed the delivery of the crucial passage between the Pacific and Atlantic to Panama, which was built under the control of the United States.
To correct what he sees as a mistake, Donald Trump even admits military intervention in that territory. And not only there, but also in Greenland, a giant island that belongs to Denmark, and in which the elected president of the United States, who takes office on January 20, recently announced his interest.
Asked about the possibility of using “military or economic coercion” to guarantee his objectives, Donald Trump simply replied “no”, after being asked if he excluded this possibility.
“No, I can’t guarantee either one, but I can say this: we need them for economic security,” he reiterated, at a press conference in which he also took shots at Mexico and even Canada.
Regarding the southern neighbors, Donald Trump began by noting that he intends to change a large geographic area that is known as the Gulf of Mexico. But this is not how the tycoon, who from January 20th will return to lead the largest democracy in the world, wants the map to be written. “America’s Gulf” is the president-elect’s latest proposal.
“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. It covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America – what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate,” he said, warning Mexico that it must stop allowing illegal emigration towards the United States, in addition to warning of new trade tariffs against neighbors to the south, but also to neighbors to the north, Canada.
A press conference in which it was possible to talk about everything: Donald Trump wants NATO countries to contribute 5% (instead of the current 2%); gave a serious warning regarding the war in the Middle East – “all hell will break loose” if the hostages do not return before the inauguration -; admitted to pardoning a large part of his supporters who participated in the invasion of the Capitol four years ago.
