The Eunice de Paiva Award for the Defense of Democracy, created by the AGU (Attorney General of the Union), was officially established by President Luiz Inácio da Silva () this Wednesday (8), during an event in memory of the attacks of January 8 2023.

The lawyer and activist after whom the award is named was portrayed in the film, by Walter Salles, in which she was played by Fernanda Torres.

Widow of deputy Marcelo Rubens Paiva, killed by the dictatorship, Eunice fought for recognition of her husband’s murder and worked in defense of human rights throughout her life.

The award will be granted annually, honoring a personality who has demonstrated, through their professional, intellectual, social or political activities, a significant contribution to strengthening the democratic regime in Brazil.

In justifying the implementation of the award sent to Lula, the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, highlighted that the award is in line with other state and non-governmental initiatives to maintain the foundations of the democratic regime.

Still in the text, the AGU says that the annual ceremony announcing the award will highlight and exalt the qualities of the recipient, in addition to evoking the memory of Eunice Paiva’s struggle.

AGU will publish, in the first quarter of 2024, a normative act with the additional information necessary to implement the award.
