Film ‘I’m Still Here’ starring actress Fernanda Torres was referenced by the president when expressing that democracy is still alive after two years of anti-democratic attacks in Brasília
This Wednesday (8), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke during the ceremony that commemorates two years since the events of January 8, when protesters invaded the Três Poderem headquarters in Brasília. During the event, Lula declared that “we are still here” and that democracy is still alive. On the other hand, “I’m Still Here” is the title of the film starring Fernanda Torres and highly acclaimed by critics. Actress received the Golden Globe in the Best Actress in a Drama Film category this week.
“Today is the day to say loud and clear, we are still here. We are here to make sure that we are alive and that democracy is alive, contrary to what the coup plotters plan on January 8, 2033. We are here women and men of different origins, beliefs, united by a common cause. We are here to say loud and clear dictatorship never again, democracy always”, said the President of the Republic.
At the same time, the film ‘I’m Still Here’ was referenced by Lula during the statement. Walter Salles’ film stars actress Fernanda Torres, who won the Golden Globe last Sunday (05). In the work, the artist plays Eunice Paiva, wife of Rubens Paiva, murdered during the military dictatorship. After the unprecedented award, the president called Fernanda to congratulate her on her achievement and in the phone call he recalled the importance of the film for the moment Brazil is living in.
Thinking about the consequences of the acts carried out in 2023, the STF (Supreme Federal Court) has already convicted 375 defendants, as a result of the denunciation of 1,682 people involved. Later, at another point in the speech, Lula defended the punishment of those responsible and stated that the investigations are ongoing. “No one has been or will be unjustly arrested. Everyone will pay for the crimes they committed, everyone”, he said.
During the ceremony, Lula also mentioned the alleged assassination attempt against him, Geraldo Alckmin and Alexandre de Moraes, and stated that everyone involved “will have ample rights of defense and will be entitled to the presumption of innocence”.
