Foreigner notified to leave Portugal detained after contempt in restaurant in Funchal

The 36-year-old man was arrested in the parish of Santo António, in the municipality of Funchal, Madeira. He had already been notified by AIMA to leave Portugal in April last year.

A foreign citizen, notified by the Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum (AIMA) to voluntarily leave the country in April 2024, was detained on Wednesday on the island of Madeira, according to the .

The police authority clarifies that the 36-year-old man was arrested in the parish of Santo António, in the municipality of Funchal, following disrespect in a restaurant.

“After contact with the employees, a foreign citizen was identified who was there, who was allegedly disturbing the normal functioning of that establishment”, says the PSP in a statement, highlighting that the citizen, whose nationality is not mentioned, was detained for “illegal stay in national territory”.

“Since he did not have documents, a police investigation was carried out which established his illegal stay in national territory, given that his initial request for granting a temporary residence permit had been rejected on April 22, 2024”, explains the authority police officer.

Subjected to the first interrogation

The PSP also verified that he had been notified by AIMA to leave the country voluntarily at the time, and was, as such, in a situation of disobedience, a fact that led to his arrest.

The detainee was subjected to the first judicial interrogation, and the measure of coercion of periodic appearances at a PSP police station was determined while the extradition process instructed by AIMA was ongoing.
