This Tuesday (7), naturism federations from around the world decided to give voice to the revolt against the censorship of their supporters’ breasts and butts on social media and published on Meta’s platforms, simultaneously, an open letter asking the owner of the house , Mark Zuckerberg, more criteria for separating the brains from the bugs, or, in this case, images of traditional nudism from pornography. The letter is signed by 40 naturism federations from around the world.
A movement that has circulated around the planet since the end of the 19th century, naturism arrived in Brazil in the 1930s, and one of its prominent names was the actress and feminist Dora Vivacqua, better known as Luz del Fuego, who founded the first Club Brazilian naturist, in Rio de Janeiro, in 1954. Although more widespread in Europe, and especially in Germany, it is estimated that, in Latin America, they are in some way linked to the movement at least 100,000 practitioners — who in times of paranoid algorithms are facing what Paula Silveira, president of the Brazilian Federation of Naturism, calls “a true witch hunt.”
Naturism has suffered from being frequently thrown (and judged) into the same box as the market for videos and photos aimed at the adult market, with or without explicit sex. As algorithms insist on indiscriminately removing even images of renowned paintings such as “The Origin of the World”, by Frenchman Gustave Coubert, exhibited at the Musée d’Orsay, in Paris, naturists, in practice, feel — and rightly so — harmed in publicizing its events and principles, which include trails and walks on wild beaches and private areas, the schedules of which can be found on the links of the National Naturism Federation, at https://www.fbrn.org.br.
The case is that even beaches that traditionally welcome naturists, such as Pinho, in Santa Catarina, which has always considered itself a pioneer in the country of regulated naturism, are being targeted for patrolling by residents and visitors who see nudity as an expression of little shame and immorality.
On December 27th, for example, a tourist who had taken off her clothes was warned by bathers who were there that nudity is now prohibited — which is not true, at least until Balneário Camboriú City Hall approves a complementary bill no. 10/2022, by councilor Anderson Santos (Podemos-SC), who has been traveling there for more than three years, and plans to chase away the very naked people from the area. But, while the burqa does not prevail, the region’s good-natured bathers have decided to carry out the ban on their own. In the most Bolsonarist state in the country, bad mistakes are not surprising, let’s face it. But they irritate.
“With so many barbarities that we see in these media”, says Paula, “like sex scenes in public places like what happened on New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro, they have to come after our posts that were up since 2019 without bothering anyone”.
It’s worth remembering that true naturism has strict rules of behavior that have nothing to do with the liberal and swing movements that take advantage of the bushes in their public spaces and have increasingly led practitioners to opt for closed events where they can take naturists and their families. It’s the old story: one thing is one thing, and another thing is something very different.
And you, dear reader, how do you feel getting closer and closer to the Middle Ages?
