Gavin Newsom authorized the State National Guard to assist in maintaining security in Los Angeles; region suffers from fires
The governor of California (USA), Gavin Newsom, authorized on Thursday (January 9, 2025) for the National Guard of the North American state to assist in security in the Los Angeles region. The place is suffering from forest fires that have already left 10 people dead and thousands of people displaced.
According to local authorities, the region has been the target of looting and scammers. “The National Guard arrived in Los Angeles to support local police. Taking advantage of evacuated communities is completely sick. Withdrawals will not be tolerated”, the governor on X (formerly Twitter).
In , the California government said that, with the reinforcement of the National Guard, the number of personnel working to mitigate the effects of the fires rises to 8,000, including 6,200 firefighters.
The members of the National Guard will deploy “at traffic control points to ensure the safety of the surrounding community”. They will also assist “in local law enforcement”.
The tests have been underway in California since Tuesday (7 January). The flames forced the evacuation of more than 130,000 residents and left 10 people dead. The fire remains uncontrolled in parts of California.
On Wednesday (Jan 8), the President of the USA, Joe Biden (Democratic Party), issued a decree recognizing that there was a disaster of major proportions. The measure facilitates the use of federal resources to fight the flames.

The United States FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) banned flights near Los Angeles to “provide a safe environment for aviation firefighting operations”. The restriction will extend until January 21st.
The city’s tourist attractions, such as Griffith Park, the Los Angeles Zoo and the Hollywood sign, were closed by the local administration.
