The Supreme Court is inclined to uphold the validity of a law that requires TikTok to be sold or, failing that, banned in the United States. The information is from the newspaper The New York Times.

Although some justices expressed concerns that the law was in conflict with the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states that Congress cannot create laws that limit freedom of expression, most justices seemed satisfied that the law was aimed at the ownership of TikTok.

The American government presented two justifications for the existence of the law: combating disinformation promoted by China and preventing the Asian country from collecting private information from Americans.

The Supreme Court was divided over whether the first justification was sufficient to uphold the law. But, according to the New York Timesseveral judges expressed concern about the possibility that China could use data taken from the app for espionage or blackmail.

The judges explored the practical implications of a ruling against TikTok and discussed the possibility that it could provide the incentive needed to convince ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to seek to sell the app.

The court brought the case to the table exceptionally quickly. He is likely to issue a decision by the end of next week. The ruling will be one of the most important in recent history, as TikTok has become a cultural phenomenon used by millions of Americans.
