There are two Portuguese dishes that stand out in the Taste Atlas gastronomic guide – the Bulhão Pato clams for the best reasons, and the gizzards for the worst.
As Bulhão Pato style clams appear as the 18th best food in the world in the top 100 prepared, this delicacy stands out as “typically enjoyed as an aperitif and generally served with bread on the side”.
“Named after the 19th century poet Raimundo António de Bulhão Pato, this simple Portuguese dish combines clams and a tasty sauce made from olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and fresh coriander,” the guide adds, noting that “the sauce can also have white wine as one of the ingredients.”
The list also includes Alentejo-style pork in 39th place, the roast chicken with piri piri in the 85th and the it was okay of Madeira in 86th place.
In first place in this top 100, as the best food in the world, comes “piglet”a pork dish from Colombia. It follows Neapolitan pizza ea rump steak from Brazil closes the podium.
Gizzards among the worst snacks in the world
In another table with the worst foods in the world, Portuguese gizzards stand out in 16th place. This dish, really, you either love it or hate it.
The fact that it is a part of the bird’s stomachwhere mechanical digestion of food takes place, can be a source of displeasure for many.
But the gizzards are rich in proteinsvitamins B12 and B3, and iron, in addition to being highly appreciated as a snack by many food fans.
The worst dish of all on the Taste Atlas list is a Finnish food called “Blood Palt” which is a type of dumpling made with rye flour and pig or reindeer blood.
The Spanish sardine “bocadillos” appear in second place, and closing the podium of worst foods is another Nordic dish, Swedish “calskrove” which is basically a pizza stuffed with burgers and fries.
Portuguese cuisine is the fifth best in the world
Taste Atlas also places it as the fifth best in the world, behind Greek (1st), Italian (2nd), Mexican (3rd) and Spanish (4th).
Furthermore, it highlights the Alentejo as one of the best regions in the world in terms of food, in ninth place, placing Trás-os-Montes in 14th place, the Algarve in 20th and the Azores in 51st.
In terms of regions, the guide also automates the districts of Bragança (80º), of Vila Real (81st), although they belong to Trás-os-Montes, and Santarém (91º).
Lisboa appears in 27th place of the best cities to eat, and is the only Portuguese one on the list of 100.
