Los Angeles fire death toll rises to 11

Los Angeles County authorities updated, this Friday (10/1), to 11 the number of deaths related to the fires ravaging the region. Five of these deaths are associated with the fire raging in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, while the other six are the result of the fire consuming the Eaton area.

What happened

  • The fires in Los Angeles have already caused 11 deaths, five in Pacific Palisades and six in Eaton, and there may be more victims as the search progresses.
  • Risks such as exposed wires and gas leaks make it difficult for emergency teams and investigators to work in the most devastated areas.
  • Four active wildfires have forced the evacuation of more than 153,000 people in Los Angeles County.
  • Around 10,000 properties were destroyed and containment efforts remain intense.

The expectation is that the total number of victims may increase, as conditions allow for a more detailed analysis of the affected areas. According to authorities, risks such as exposed high voltage wires and gas leaks make the work of emergency teams and investigators in the most devastated locations difficult.

The county is currently experiencing four major active wildfires. More than 153,000 people are under evacuation orders, according to the local sheriff.

The situation also generated confusion among the population after alerts were accidentally sent to millions of residents. In response, authorities publicly apologized and reinforced the importance of keeping notification systems activated.

Material destruction is also significant, with at least 10,000 properties completely destroyed. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass highlighted the federal government’s support to face the crisis.

“Yesterday, President Biden pledged his full support for the response efforts, including reimbursement of 100% of the costs of our disaster response by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency),” Bass said at a press conference.

The also mobilized resources to help residents impacted by the fires and encouraged residents to seek assistance through disasterassistance.gov.

Emergency teams continue to work around the clock to contain the spread of the fire and mitigate damage.
