‘Both considered it positive that Brazil and Europe continue to work together to prevent the spread of ‘fake news’ from putting the sovereignty of countries at risk’, says the Palácio do Planalto in a statement
The President of the Republic Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke by telephone this Friday (10) with Emmanuel Macron, President of France, about his decision to stop fact-checking on his platforms in the United States. During the conversation, both leaders expressed the importance of joint actions between Brazil and Europe to combat the spread of fake news that could compromise the sovereignty of countries.
“They agreed that freedom of expression does not mean freedom to spread lies, prejudices and offenses. Both considered it positive that Brazil and Europe continue to work together to prevent the dissemination of ‘fake news’ from putting the sovereignty of countries, democracy and the fundamental rights of their citizens at risk”, says Palácio do Planalto in a statement.
During the call lasting around 30 minutes, Lula praised the French government’s stance in relation to the decision by Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Furthermore, Macron reiterated his invitation for Lula to visit France in June, when the Brazilian president will be able to participate in the United Nations Conference on the Oceans. The trip is seen as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss environmental issues of global relevance.
