What was Gabriel Medina’s injury? When will the surfer return?
Gabriel Medina was injured during training at Praia de Maresias, in São Sebastião, north coast of São Paulo, on Friday (11/01). While trying to perform an aerial maneuver, he injured the pectoralis major muscle tendon in his left shoulder.
The athlete underwent surgery this Saturday and will miss the WSL season.
— The surgery was successful and we were able to reconstitute the tendon properly. After the initial recovery period, Gabriel will begin intensive physiotherapy sessions and should be able to return to training in four to six months and to competitions in six to eight months — explained Breno Schor, orthopedist responsible for the surfer’s procedure.
The 2025 WSL season begins on January 27th, in Pipeline, Hawaii. Without Medina, Brazil still has strong names on the circuit. Among them, Tatiana Weston-Webb, Filipe Toledo, Italo Ferreira and João Chianca.

Gabriel started surfing at the age of 8, after his parents’ divorce and encouraged by his stepfather, Charlão, who was an amateur surfer.
At the age of 11, he began to win amateur, regional and national titles. In 2011, he became the youngest Brazilian surfer to have access to the WSL Championship Tour (CT), at just 17 years old.
In 2014, he was the first Brazilian to win the World Championship. In the following three years, he always placed himself among the top three, winning the world titles again in 2018 and 2021, consolidating himself as one of the main surfers in the world.
