(FOLHAPRESS) – The Israeli Army has approved plans to withdraw troops from parts of the Gaza Strip amid the resumption of negotiations for a ceasefire with the terrorist group Hamas, the newspaper Haaretz reported this Saturday (11).
According to the publication, the Israeli Armed Forces analyzed several plans for the rapid departure of the military. One of these plans would involve withdrawal through the Netzarim corridor, a wide strip of land occupied by the Israeli Army that divides the Gaza Strip into two parts.
The military also clarified that they are ready to implement any agreement made by the government, which in practice could indicate that the plans approved this Saturday are a protocol for the eventual withdrawal in Gaza, not exactly a sign that negotiations are moving in that direction.
Also this Saturday, however, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu instructed a delegation led by the heads of Mossad and Shin Bet, Israel’s intelligence agencies, to participate in talks in Qatar on an agreement that would make it possible to halt attacks on Palestinian territory. and the release of Israeli hostages.
The announcement was made after a meeting between Netanyahu and Steve Witkoff, US President-elect Donald Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, in Jerusalem. Before that, Witkoff was in Doha, where he met with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed al-Thani.
On Tuesday (7), Trump said at a press conference that Gaza “will turn into hell” if the hostages still held by Hamas are not released by the 20th, when the Republican takes office. President Joe Biden, in his final days in office, spoke on Thursday (9) about “real progress” in negotiations.
The dispatch of negotiators was welcomed by the Hostage Families Forum, the main association of relatives of those held captive in the Gaza Strip. “We urge the delegation to seize this historic opportunity to obtain the release of all our loved ones,” the group said in a statement.
The Israeli Army invaded Gaza following the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, which left around 1,200 people dead in southern Israel. Since then, attacks in Tel Aviv have killed more than 46,000 Palestinians in the territory, according to the local Ministry of Health, controlled by the faction.
