At around 11pm on Friday (10), ten armed men invaded the settlement in Vale do Paraíba and opened fire on the residents, according to the landless movement.
Eight people were hit and taken to the Taubaté Regional Hospital and the Tremembé Emergency Room, according to information from the MST, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat.
Two did not survive their injuries: Valdir do Nascimento and Gleison Barbosa. The surviving victims were shot in the feet, hands and back, according to Gilmar Mauro.
According to the leader, the settlement is undergoing invasion attempts due to the real estate expansion in the region. “It’s a announced tragedy, we’ve already contacted the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Justice Department, but nothing happened,” says Mauro.
According to him, the attack was preceded by a first encounter, in which residents expelled an invader from the area. The settlers then gathered in the same place, in an attempt to stop a new invasion, and were shot by an armed group.
The case was registered as murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm permitted for use on duty at the Taubaté Sectional Police Station. A man was approached at the scene and charged with illegal possession of a weapon.
The settlement has 690 hectares – around 960 football fields – and has been regularized by Incra (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform) since December 2005. Fifty-two families reside in the area.
Governor Tarcísio de Freitas and the Secretary of Public Security, Guilherme Derrite, have not yet commented on the episode.
