Barcelona beat Real Madrid 5-2 in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, played this Sunday (12) in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. This is the club’s fourth title in six editions of the competition in the current format.
Real Madrid started the match with an advantage, with a goal scored by Mbappé in the 4th minute, after receiving the ball from Vini Jr. Barcelona soon reacted. At 21, the equalizer came with a goal from Lamine Yamal and, at 35, Lewandowski turned the score around with a penalty kick.
Hansi Flick’s team took advantage of the flaws in Real Madrid’s defense and prevailed throughout the rest of the first half, extending their lead with goals from Raphinha, with a header, and Alex Balde.
Raphinha scored his second goal of the match at the beginning of the second half, shortly before Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for a foul on Mbappé. With one player less, the team conceded a goal from Rodrygo in the 14th minute, but Real Madrid were unable to react and Barcelona held on until the end of the match.
Since 2019, the Spanish Super Cup has brought together four clubs: the champion and runner-up of the Spanish Championship and the champion and runner-up of the Copa del Rey from the previous season. Barcelona won in 2020, 2022, 2024 and 2025. Barcelona won the title in 2023, and Athletic Bilbao in 2021.
The competition takes place in Saudi Arabia due to a contract between the Spanish Federation and the country’s government, where the competition must take place at least until 2029. The entity usually takes matches abroad to increase viewership and revenue.
