What’s the point of putting baking soda in the washing machine?

You may have heard of it but never tried it. Adding baking soda to the washing machine sounds like another “grandmother’s advice” that promises more than it delivers. But this simple trick has a surprisingly logical explanation and, above all, it works.

Baking soda is one of those ingredients that almost everyone has at home. However, we mostly only use it in the kitchen. At the same time, it can surprisingly do a lot in washing – from removing odors to making it better.

It’s not about . When used correctly, baking soda can be a small helper that improves both the washing result and the condition of the washing machine itself.

Helps remove odors from clothes

Baking soda works as a natural odor neutralizer. It doesn’t just “overpower” the scent, it really breaks it down.

Therefore, it is mainly suitable for sweaty clothes, sports items or towels that no longer smell even after washing.

Its ability to neutralize odors is one of its greatest advantages.

Softens water and improves washing

“It might surprise you, but baking soda can slightly soften the water. And that’s essential when washing,” says professional cleaner Nasťa from Prague.

Hard water reduces the effectiveness of the detergent. When you add baking soda, the washing powder dissolves better and works more efficiently.

Result? Cleaner laundry even with a smaller amount of detergent.

Cleans the washing machine from the inside

The washing machine is not maintenance-free. Powder residues, scale and bacteria gradually settle in it. This then causes odor and poor performance.

Baking soda helps break down deposits, neutralize odors and gently “clean” the drum without damaging it.

Just add it to the empty cycle along with hot water. In combination with other natural products, it can keep the washing machine fresh and hygienic.

It helps against graying of laundry

If you feel that your white clothes are gradually losing color, baking soda can help. Thanks to its composition, it helps to remove residues of detergents and minerals that settle on fabrics.

What to watch out for

Baking soda may be gentle, but it is not omnipotent.

It is important to know that baking soda does not replace a classic detergent, it should not be mixed with other substances in one step (for example, vinegar), because their effects are canceled. Use it sparingly on colored laundry.

How to use it in practice

Really little is enough. Usually 1-2 tablespoons are added directly to the drum or to the detergent. To clean the washing machine, feel free to add half a cup to the empty cycle at a higher temperature.

A little trick that makes sense

Baking soda isn’t a miracle cure-all. But exactly the kind of little thing that can improve your daily laundry.
