The Superior Council of the Federal Public Ministry changed the resolution that created the National Support Group for Combating Organized Crime to include electoral crimes committed by criminal organizations.
The changes to Gaeco Nacional are in resolutions issued on Thursday (June 25, 2026), signed by the Attorney General of Justice and president of the council, Paulo Gonet Branco, and published on Friday (June 26). Here is the document (PDF – 132 KB).
According to the new wording, Gaeco Nacional can act on electoral crimes committed by a criminal faction and related infractions, as long as they are subject to prosecution and judgment by the Federal Court or the Electoral Court. Cases under the responsibility of the Federal Supreme Court and the Superior Court of Justice are excluded from the new jurisdiction, unless expressly requested by the Attorney General of the Republic.
The change allows the coordinator of Gaeco Nacional to call the Superior Court of Justice when he identifies that an investigation or criminal action is being processed in the state courts, but, in the group’s opinion, should be judged by the Federal Court. In these cases, the STJ decides which branch of the Judiciary is competent to conduct the process.
GAECO NATIONAL
Gaeco Nacional was created in February 2025 to support prosecutors in combating organized crime on a national and interstate scale. The group provides support to those responsible for each case, can act in intelligence activities and participate in conducting investigations together with the natural prosecutor and the police, without replacing the duties of the Federal Public Ministry units.
