Palm Springs international festival jury chooses the film for conveying “horror of the invading dictatorship from the intimate perspective of a mother”
The Brazilian film “I’m Still Here” won this Sunday (12 January 2025) “Best International Film” at , in California (USA).
The feature film, directed by Walter Salles and starring Fernanda Torres, was chosen by the jury made up of critics Brian D. Johnson (Canadian), Marcelo Janot (Brazilian) and Paola Caseslla (Italian).
“’I’m Still Here’ for conveying the horror of the invading dictatorship from the intimate perspective of a mother who defends not only her family of 5, but her dignity. Evoking the gravity of violence without resorting to melodrama, director Walter Salles captures a critical moment in history with scrupulous and convincing detail.”they said.
“I’m Still Here” is based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva. It tells the story of his mother, Eunice Paiva (1929-2018), after the disappearance, in 1971, of the writer’s father, the impeached deputy Rubens Paiva (1929-1971), during the Brazilian military dictatorship.
The film surpassed 3 million viewers in theaters last week.
GOLDEN GLOBE
Fernanda Torres, 59 years old, won the Golden Globe on Monday (6 January) in the “Best Actress in a Drama Film” category. Playing the lawyer and human rights activist Eunice Paiva, the actress names like Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie and Kate Winslet.
