Rome – Iranian businessman Mohammad Abedini, who was arrested in Italy, was released on Sunday and returned to his homeland. Italian media linked his case to Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who returned to Italy from Iranian custody on Wednesday. Abedini was arrested in Milan last month on a US warrant. Three days later, Sala was detained in Tehran. She was accused of violating the laws of the Islamic Republic, without being more specific. The Iranian government rejected claims that Sala was a bargaining chip to secure Abedini’s release. The US accuses Abedini of having procured components for drones that were used to attack US soldiers. (Reuters, January 13, 2025)
