The large Spanish construction companies are fighting to take over the work of the Formula 1 circuit, a business valued at more than 100 million euros, as EL PAÍS has been able to verify. The deadline for submitting offers to the contract has expired works for the construction and subsequent replacement of the infrastructure necessary to hold an F1 grand prixthe Madrid Fair Institution (IFEMA), promoter of the automotive grand prix, has received five applications for participation. One is from Dragados. The second unites Ferrovial, Sacyr and Pavasal. The third is from FCC. The fourth groups, among others, Obrascón Huarte, Acsa, Vialex and Rover. And the fifth, to Acciona and Eiffage.

The contest represents a key step in the development of the event, which will debut on the sports calendar in 2026, and will remain in the region, which is opposed by residents (through the FRAVM) and left-wing parties. , who have seen how Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s PP has endorsed the announcement that F1 will land in the capital of Spain.

The documents accompanying the contest state that the circuit will have a length of 5.474 kilometers, 20 curves, and a qualifying lap of 1 minute and 32 seconds. The route would use the IFEMA roads, both from the current site and from the expansion that will soon take place. The circuit will provide “unprecedented spaces” in F1, such as a paddock covered and air-conditioned, “unique in the entire international circuit.” The vehicles will be able to reach peak speeds of 300 kilometers per hour and the project will have capacity for more than 110,000 spectators.

The organizers expect that 70% of the spectators will arrive from outside the capital and that 35% will do so from outside Spain, spending an average of almost four nights in the city, with an average expenditure of more than 1,300 euros. Everything to enjoy the great Formula 1 circus. A proposal that does not convince either the neighbors or the left-wing opposition.

The Regional Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Madrid (FRAVM) has asked the capital’s City Council to “not grant” the license for the Madrid Formula 1 Grand Prix, which will take place between 2026 and 2035, due to “the lack of rigor” of the project and “its serious inconvenience” in the neighborhood.

Specifically, last week a document with allegations was registered before the City Council, agreed upon with associations of “the affected neighborhoods”, which rejects the “serious effects” of noise and mobility in the area, the “absence” of safety protocols. security, as well as “the lack of information about the public resources that will be necessary.”

“Despite its magnitude and its strong effects on the territory, haste, opacity and improvisation have marked the urban circuit project until now. Three characteristics that are behind the request for a temporary activity license for the construction of the circuit and the complementary facilities necessary for the development of the event,” the association detailed in a statement.

For the neighborhood associations, “it is striking that the City Council has initiated the licensing procedures in recent weeks without having yet responded to the allegations of the Special Plan.”

Thus, the FRAVM asked to reject the license due to “the serious noise conditions” and “its more than foreseeable collision with the fundamental right of the inviolability of the home contained in article 18 of the Constitution.”

“The municipal project only includes noise pollution from the competition vehicles, not other associated noises such as that from the circuit construction works, public address systems, transport trucks or helicopters, and does not establish any corrective measures and much less containment barriers to protect the closest homes, so that for this reason alone the license should be denied,” he indicated.

Likewise, he pointed out that the project’s acoustic impact maps “recognize that it will cause serious harm to a large number of residents.

On the other hand, the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, of the PP, committed the support of the City Council to the celebration of the sporting event. “It is essential that these types of events come,” he said.
