In addition to the million-dollar prize for those who hit six tens in Mega-Sena, another great privilege is the Federal Government. Even though there are no taxes on the prize, the winner only keeps a portion of the amount collected by Caixa Econômica.
Taking the 2024 Mega da Virada as an example, the value of R$635,486,165.38 of the prize paid represents only 62% of the amount collected by the lottery. In the rest of the draws, the prize pool is even smaller, at 43.79%.
The other 56.21% of lottery revenue remains with the Federal Government, being transferred to social programs and used to maintain lottery services.
