Edmundo González leaves the Dominican Republic and his fate is unknown

Exiled in Spain since September, González, who claims to be the winner of the Venezuelan presidential elections, arrived at the airport terminal amidst a security device.

The leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Edmundo González Urrutia, left the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, where he arrived last week as part of his tour of South American countries, but so far his fate is unknown

The private plane in which González Urrutia is traveling took off from La Isabela International Airport in Santo Domingo at around 1:30 pm local time, 5:30 pm in Portugal, airport sources told the EFE agency.

Although the plane’s destination is not officially known, it is flying west and, according to FlightAWare, the likely destination is Guatemala.

Edmundo González, exiled in Spain since September and who claims to be the winner of the Venezuelan presidential elections, arrived at the airport terminal amidst a security device.

Santo Domingo was the last stop for Edmundo González Urrutia, who claims to have won the Venezuelan presidential election in July, to gather international support for his inauguration on January 10, when leader Nicolás Maduro was sworn in by the party-controlled National Assembly in the power.

Last week assured that it was “very close to Venezuela

On January 10, Edmundo González sent a message to the nation in which he assured that he was “very close to Venezuela”.

Maduro’s opponent says he is “ready to enter safety” and, at the opportune moment, make “valid the votes that represent the recovery of democracy”.

“I continue to work on the conditions for my entry into Venezuela and to assume, as required by the Constitution and the people ordered me, the presidency of the Republic and command in chief of the National Armed Forces”, he added.

Considering himself president-elect, González ordered “the high military command to disregard the illegal orders given to them by those who confiscate power and to prepare security conditions to assume the position of president of the Republic.”

“I order the military and police forces to cease repression and I tell the national institutions that, for the peace of the Republic, they must repudiate the illegitimate regime that tried to take power once again”, he communicated.

The National Bolivarian Armed Forces (FANB) of Venezuela reaffirmed on Sunday their loyalty to Nicolás Maduro, sworn in as President by the parliament, controlled by the Chavistas, although the majority opposition claims the victory of Edmundo González Urrutia in the July presidential elections.

On July 28, opposition leader Edmundo González faced Nicolás Maduro at the polls, in a presidential election that the opposition bloc claims to have won, according to the results it says it collected, but Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, controlled by the party in power, declared the victory of Nicolas Maduro.
