“Foreign films really need these previous awards [ao Oscar] to be seen”, explains Chico Fireman, film critic for the Oscarverso channel and partner at distributor Michiko Filmes. Unpredictable awards

The fact is that the disaster also undermined an important chance for Walter Salles’ film in the race for the statuette. A session with Oscar voters, scheduled for the 7th and which would have been mediated by filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, was cancelled. Salles and Torres would participate in the event to answer questions from the candidates.

“Everyone had already seen Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie’s films. Hers [Fernanda Torres]which would have been new, ended up losing a bit of its timing. But it regained strength once Oscar voters had more time to decide the nominees,” says Fireman.

The most recent postponement was that of the Critics Choice Award, an award from which Fernanda Torres was left out, but in which “I’m Still Here” competes in the Best Foreign Film category. The ceremony, initially scheduled for January 12th, was moved to the 26th and will now only be held in February, with a date to be defined.

The awards for the producers, screenwriters and photographers unions also postponed their ceremonies, further messing up the Oscar predictions.

More impacts on music – and sports

In music, in addition to Beyoncé, singer The Weeknd also postponed the release schedule scheduled for this beginning of the year. His new album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow”, should feature the track “Sao Paulo”, recorded with Rio singer Anitta. However, the album’s debut, scheduled for January 24th, was postponed until the 31st.

The launch show was also cancelled. The Weeknd would present the new songs in a performance at the Rose Bowl, an iconic stadium in Pasadena, California.

The world of sports was also affected by the fires, leading the NBA and NFL to postpone games with Los Angeles teams, such as the Lakers. Some matches that would have taken place in California were moved to other states.
