Porto City Hall will pay double to build an elevator between Palácio de Cristal and Restauração, which connects Cordoaria to the waterfront. Project should be ready in 2026.
Porto City Hall relaunched the competition for the construction of an elevator that aims to connect the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal to Rua da Restauração, which connects Cordoaria to the waterfront.
After a first competition in 2021, with a base value of 1.19 million euros, had no candidates, the new process now has a budget of 2.29 million euros and maintains an execution period of one year.
“The construction of a structure, which will include an elevator, will unite the two spaces of the city, located at adjacent levels, but separated by a steep slope”, informed the Porto municipality in a statement sent to newsrooms.
According to the city hall, the objective is to “improve access for the population and visitors to highly relevant spaces, with a positive impact on quality of life, economic development and tourism”.
“This new connection between Palácio de Cristal and Rua da Restauração reinforces the municipality’s strategy of promoting pedestrianization and humanization of public space in the historic center of the city, promoting inclusion, development and cultural appreciation”, reinforces Go Porto, cited by .
Proposals for the competition can be submitted until February 22, 2024, and the municipality expects the elevator to be operational in 2026.
The project is part of a proposal developed in 2017 by the Porto Alegre offices depA and Pablo Pita, which provided for several mechanized connections to overcome the city’s uneven levels, especially in the area facing the Douro River. The first of these infrastructures, the escalators that connect Miragaia to Rua do Monte dos Judeuswas opened in 2020, but has been the target of criticism due to frequent failures and mainly tourist use.
Other proposals, such as a connection in the Passeio das Virtudes areawere rejected by heritage preservation organizations.
