Fined in football and fishing: former national team player had more than a ton of illegal seafood

For many years, the Portuguese became accustomed to seeing Fábio Coentrão on the pitch. Born in Caxinas, a fishing community in Vila do Conde, the 36-year-old former player graduated from Rio Ave and ended his career at the same club, having played for Benfica and Real Madrid, in addition to playing for the national team. From football he moved on to fishing and now Fábio Coentrão is caught with more than a ton of illegal seafood.

Recently, Fábio Coentrão revealed his new side in television interviews, after leaving football at the end of the 2020/21 season. After being born and living most of his life in Caxinas, a fishing community, the former national team player returned to his roots to make a living from fishing.

What is known is that the former footballer was caught with more than a ton of illegal live seafood in a warehouse in the fishing port of Póvoa de Varzim, according to information provided by . We are talking about a total of 1,020 kilos of seafood. Among lobster, shrimp and spider crab, it is also known that more than half of the fish did not have legal documentation for capture.

Added to this is another problem. The former football player opened a business without licenses seven months ago, and has now been notified by the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) to close its doors. There are also suspicions of illegal abstraction of water directly from the sea.

Fábio Coentrão now risks being the target of several fines worth hundreds of euros. However, this would not be the former player’s first time being associated with fines. In football he was sent off several times and the clubs were also subject to fines, in addition to the game suspensions that followed. Coentrão was even punished with a one-match suspension and a fine of 850 euros after finishing his career, as a result of a disciplinary process opened in the last season in which he wore his boots.
