Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan is out of danger, police said on Thursday. Saif Ali Khan was stabbed during a fight with an intruder at his home in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, and underwent surgery.
Saif Ali Khan, 54, is the son of former India cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore.
“Saif Ali Khan is being treated and is out of danger,” senior police official Gedam Dixit told Reuters.
News agency ANI (in which Reuters holds a minority stake) quoted a hospital official, Niraj Uttamani, as saying that Saif Ali Khan “is currently in surgery” and who added that “the extent of Saif Ali Khan’s injuries will be understood when the surgery is complete.”
A small piece of foreign body was identified near the spine, added Uttamani, the director of operations at the hospital where Khan was taken at around 3:30 am.
Saif Ali Khan, who has appeared in more than 70 films and television series – some of which he also produced – lives in an apartment in the western suburbs of Bandra, with his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan, also an actress, and their two children.
His wife’s representatives confirmed that Saif Ali Khan was undergoing intervention following the attempted robbery, adding: “The rest of the family is fine.”
A maid at the house was also attacked and is being treated, added the police, who began an investigation and search for the perpetrator.
Film stars and opposition leaders called on the police to step up security measures in the city.
“If such important people can safely be attacked in their homes, what can happen to ordinary citizens?” asked Clyde Crasto, spokesperson for the Nationalist Congress Party, on the social network X.
India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies won November elections in the western state of Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai.
Actress and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt also called for a greater police presence in the suburb, where many actors in the film industry live.
“The city has never felt so unsafe before,” said Pooja Bhatt on X.
