Last Thursday (16), the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), denied the request for leave to lieutenant colonel Rodrigo Bezerra de Azevedo. Bezerra is one of those investigated in the investigation that investigates the alleged attempt in 2022. Since November last year, he has been in preventive arrest, accused of being part of the ‘black kids’, a group that allegedly planned the murder of prominent political figures, including the president, the vice-president and the minister Alexandre de Moraes himself.

In his decision, Moraes, who is the rapporteur of the investigation, emphasized the competence of the Federal Supreme Court to conduct the investigations. He highlighted that the investigation does not distinguish between military personnel and civilians, reinforcing that military justice is intended to judge military crimes, and not crimes committed by military personnel. This investigation, which involves 40 defendants, including former president Jair Bolsonaro, is currently under analysis by the prosecutor at the Attorney General’s Office.

The expectation is that Paulo Gonet will complete his analysis by the end of January, at which point he will decide whether those indicted will be turned into defendants. If this occurs, the investigation will return to the Federal Supreme Court in February for a new analysis. This case investigates the attempt to keep Bolsonaro in power, preventing Lula from taking office in 2022, and continues to be one of the main focuses of political and legal attention in the country.
