President-elect Donald Trump is unlikely to change his stance on Russia sanctions, says a Kremlin spokesman.
Russia does not expect any fundamental changes in US sanctions after Donald Trump takes office, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday, according to the TASS agency. TASR informs about it.
“It’s no secret that, despite certain expressions of political willingness to conduct a dialogue, the (future) US administration is unlikely to change its position on this issue (sanctions),” Peskov said in response to the statements of Scott Bessent, Trump’s nominee for the post of US Treasury Secretary.
On Thursday, at a confirmation hearing in the Senate Finance Committee, Bessent spoke in favor of introducing stricter sanctions against Russia and especially its oil industry. According to him, this should force Moscow to start negotiations on Ukraine.
Biden has imposed more than 100 sanctions
The United States, under the leadership of President Joe Biden, imposed a number of restrictive measures against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Washington has also repeatedly tried to prevent their violation or evasion with sanctions.
The outgoing Biden administration on Wednesday imposed new sanctions on more than 150 entities, including Russian banks and companies that operate in the Russian energy sector. These measures are intended to limit Russia’s ability to wage war and avoid further sanctions, which the United States says was aided by entities from China.
A few days earlier, the US government imposed restrictions on the Russian oil companies Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, as well as on 183 tankers suspected of belonging to the so-called Russian shadow fleet. These are tankers and cargo ships that Russia uses to circumvent existing sanctions on the transportation of oil.
