The Minister (Integration and Regional Development) plans to expand the alert system aimed at the population in areas at high risk of natural disasters to the North, Northeast and Central-West this quarter.

A. Waldez states that there are some conditions for states and municipalities to be able to deal with early warning, such as the quality of meteorological and geological information at the location and the preparation of the community that receives the warning.

“People need, at the time of that severe warning, to know where to leave, what the escape plan is, what the signs are, where they should take shelter”, he states. “The cell broadcast [sistema usado]when we make it available to the municipality, it has to have good preparation to deal with that alert, otherwise it will become chaos. How is he going to give an extreme warning to the community to evacuate if people haven’t been trained to do so?”

If a resident of a risk area is using their cell phone to, for example, watch a movie and the alert is issued, the warning interrupts the activity to indicate the danger. “But this is a construction of culture. We started first with the most recurring states and municipalities, moved to the entire South and Southeast and now we are going to enter the North, Northeast and Central-West”, he states.

For the alert to be sent to the population, municipal or state civil protection and defense bodies need to register the possible disaster on the Idap platform (Public Alert Disclosure Interface), of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development. The notice is sent via SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, pay TV and by Defense Civil Alerta itself.
