Trump asked for time to consider approving the suspension of the social network. Joe Biden’s administration stated that it will leave the decision to the president-elect’s team.
On TikTok he said that will be forced to close in the United States on Sunday unless the North American Government guarantees the non-application of the law that prohibits the platform in the country.
“Unfortunately, TikTok will be forced to close on January 19” unless “the Joe Biden administration ensures the non-enforcement of the law” that bans the popular app in the United States, the company wrote on the social network X on Friday -Thursday night.
TikTok has been fighting this law for months, through the US Congress in March, in the name of national security.
But the United States Supreme Court on Friday refused to suspend it, sealing the social network’s fate in the country, unless there is a last-minute intervention.
Trump asked for time to consider its approval. Joe Biden’s administration stated that it will leave the decision on whether to approve the law banning TikTok to Donald Trump’s team.
The decision by the highest court in the United States (USA) was made just over 36 hours before the deadline imposed by the North American Congress on TikTok’s parent company, the Chinese group ByteDance, to sell the social network.
Trump wants to save social network…
The new United States government, which takes office on January 20, “will put measures in place to prevent TikTok from becoming unavailable” in the countrythe national security advisor chosen by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Friday in an interview.
On the Fox News program Fox & Friends, Florida congressman Mike Waltz recalled that the federal law that could ban the social network until Sunday “allows extension, as long as a viable agreement is on the table”.
A day earlier, also on Fox News, Mike Waltz said the president-elect was exploring options to “preserve TikTok” after being asked about a report in The Washington Post that said Trump was considering an executive order to halt the execution of a federal law.
“If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the law, President Trump has been very clear: First, TikTok is a huge platform that many [norte-]Americans use it and it has been great for their campaign and for spreading their message. Second, it will protect your data,” said Waltz.
“He is a negotiator. I don’t want to get ahead of our executive orders, but we will create this space to put this agreement into practice,” he added.
Meanwhile, Pam Bondi, Trump’s pick for attorney general, dodged a question at a Senate hearing about whether she would maintain the TikTok ban.
…but first I wanted to ban it
Trump changed his position on the application, having during his first termbetween 2017 and 2021, due to concerns about national security.
He joined TikTok during the 2024 presidential campaign and his team used it to connect with younger voters, especially male voters, by sharing content considered sexist.
The republican prometeu “salvar o TikTok” during the campaign and credited the platform with helping him win more young votes.
This month, Bloomberg reported that Chinese authorities are considering the possibility of Trump’s ally, Elon Musk acquire TikTok’s North American operations if the platform is banned. TikTok has already denied this scenario.
