Groups that defend women’s rights, social justice and environmental preservation criticized Republican policies that they classify as unconstitutional

Thousands of protesters gathered this Saturday (January 18, 2025) in Washington, United States, to protest against the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump (Republican Party). The information is from the agency .

Groups advocating for women’s rights, racial justice and other causes have criticized policies they consider “threats to constitutional rights” during the Republican’s 2nd term. The act, called “People’s March”, took protesters to the center of the North American capital in light rain.

Many protesters wore distinctive pink hats and marched from the White House to the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall. The event referred to 2017, when Trump was elected for the first time, but on a smaller scale.

Organizers expected 50,000 people to attend, but local police estimated around 25,000 participants. According to activists, the women’s rights movement, which gained great prominence in 2017, now appears more fragmented. In addition to the main march, more than 300 events were organized in other cities across the country.

The demonstration brought together groups defending reproductive rights, environmental activists, social justice movements and opponents of immigration policies. Many carried signs with messages such as “People above politics” e “Feminists against fascists”.

Trump, who defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris (Democratic Party) in the November 2024 election, promised significant changes at the beginning of the new term. His statements include strict immigration operations and restructuring of the federal government.

Trump’s victory in 2024 consolidated his political strength by winning all the swing states and winning the popular vote — something unprecedented for Republicans in 2 decades. . He had already defeated another candidate who could be the first female president of the United States, Hillary Clinton, in 2016.

PEACEFUL PROTESTS

Despite the tense atmosphere, the protests were peaceful. Police cars monitored the event, and protesters used buttons and carried flags with messages such as “#MeToo” and “Love trumps hate” (“Love conquers hate”).

There were, however, moments of confrontation. According to Reutersa man wearing a red cap with Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again,” was removed by police. Anti-abortion activists also displayed graphic signs near the rally site.

Saturday’s march marks the start of a weekend of planned protests, including demonstrations on Inauguration Day, which coincides with the holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

As Trump prepares to take office this Monday (January 20), protesters claim that mobilization will be a fundamental tool to confront the new government’s policies.
