Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino criticized the statement on Monday US President Donald Trump, who declared during his inaugural address that the United States would “take back” the Panama Canal. Mulino rejected Trump’s claims that China now effectively manages the canal. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
“I have to completely reject the words of President Donald Trump,” Mulino said in a statement on the X Network. “Cross it and it stays Panamanian,” he continued. Trump on Monday called Washington’s handover of the canal to Panama in 1999 a “stupid” move and reiterated his promise to try to get it back.
The new American president announced this step already at the beginning of January, while he refused to rule out the use of military or economic coercion. He then used the same words towards Greenland, which he did not mention in his inaugural speech.
However, in his speech he also mentioned the Gulf of Mexico, which he wants to rename to the American Gulf. Trump also declared that under his leadership the US would be a country that “expands its borders” and promised to place the United States flag on Mars.
