A recent analysis conducted by Remitly revealed the most desired professions in different parts of the world. In Portugal, the teaching career stood out as the dream profession most sought after by the Portuguese.
The study was based on data from Google searches carried out in more than 180 countries, analyzing terms such as “how to be a…” for 415 different professions. Globally, being a pilot ranks first on the list, with 432,360 searches annually. The careers of lawyer and police officer appear in second and third place, with 393,380 and 272,730 searches, respectively.
The highlight of education in Portugal
In Portugal, being a teacher leads professional aspirations. This preference is also shared by other European countries, such as Germany and Belgium. According to Remitly, the teaching profession recorded a global total of 175,420 annual searches, reflecting the importance of education as a pillar of personal and social development.
“Compared to 2022 data, we observed a growing trend towards more corporate professions, especially in the legal sector. However, education continues to play a central role in building a better society,” said Ryan Riley, Vice President of Marketing for EMEA and APAC at Remitly.
Trending professions globally
The study highlighted that almost half of the 20 most sought-after professions are related to the health sector, such as nurses, pharmacists, psychologists and midwives. This trend can be attributed to the growing awareness about the importance of health, driven by the pandemic.
Other curiosities include the interest of Australians in the DJ profession and the increase in searches related to careers such as dietician and real estate agent, which rose 79 and 64 positions, respectively, compared to 2022.
