Lula is no longer relevant in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, says Zelensky

During his participation in Davos, Switzerland, the Ukrainian president declared that Brazil, under the leadership of Lula, is no longer a relevant actor in mediation attempts between Ukraine and Russia.

In response to a question from TV GloboZelensky stated that “Brazil’s train has already passed”, referring to the country’s opportunity to act as a mediator in the conflict.

Zelensky stressed that, after previous conversations with Lula, he no longer sees the Brazilian president as a “player” in the peace negotiations and that this situation will not change with the return of Donald Trump to the US presidency.

Throughout 2023, Lula tried, unsuccessfully, to position himself as a mediator between the parties. In his speeches, the Brazilian president highlighted the importance of dialogue, but Zelensky, in a speech at the UN General Assembly, expressed doubts about the real interest of Brazil and China in leading the negotiations.

Lula continues to state that the solution to the conflict must be diplomatic and that it is essential that the parties sit down at the table to discuss an agreement.
