The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, said this Friday (24) that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed solidarity with the Mexicans who are in the United States, amid Donald Trump’s expansionist and deportation threats.
“We talk about the current situation, [Lula] showed solidarity with the Mexicans who live in the United States, which I thanked”, said the Mexican president about the conversation she had with the Brazilian on Thursday (23).
This comes days after the inauguration of the Republican, who has already signed decrees in the USA to prevent immigrants from entering across the borders and send troops to the border with Mexico.
Commenting on the call, the Mexican president defined Lula as an “extraordinary man” and “a symbol not only of Brazil and the progressive struggle, but also of Latin America”.
According to Sheinbaum, she and Lula spoke about “solidarity with Panama”, which has been the target of Trump’s statements. The American president claims that the Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, is controlled by China and that . The statements are denied and repudiated by Panama.
This Thursday, Palácio do Planalto reported that the call also discussed the “purpose of cultivating productive relations with all countries in the Americas, including the new US administration”, in order to maintain peace, strengthen democracy and promote development of the region.
Since Trump’s inauguration, the issue of deportations and the – which changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the limit that corresponds to the US continental shelf – has been present in all the press conferences that Sheinbaum gives daily in his country.
Asked this week whether there will be a joint position by Latin American countries in relation to Trump’s new policies and speech, Sheinbaum did not confirm, but said that there is “unity” in the region, despite the differences.
