Playing in your own stadium or away from it has always made a difference for football teams, whether due to home privileges, the presence of the fans or simply the feeling of being at home. In the fourth round of the Bahia Championship, Vitória received an unusual challenge: playing away from home, at their biggest rival’s stadium, but without meeting them there. >
This is how, for the first time since October 2019, Leão da Barra took the red-and-black nation on a visit to Fonte Nova to play without Bahia, and made a point of showing that they felt at home where the fans claim to be. your “beach house”. Facing Colo-Colo, a club from Ilhéus, Vitória saved the first goal right away, in the 17th minute of the first half, and has not lost control of the game since then. The second came just 13 minutes later, and the third just four minutes into the second half, showing that not even the break was capable of cooling Vitória at Fonte Nova.>
For Leão, everything happened in the best possible way. Undefeated in the season so far, the red and black team is leader of the table in the Campeonato Baiano with now eight points, a nice advantage in the G-4 that qualifies for the semifinals of the tournament. Back in the first division after eight seasons, Colo-Colo, who until then had not won any match, but managed to save theirs at 16 in the second half in the clash against Leão, could not experience the same tranquility, as they needed the game at Fonte to leave the relegation zone of the table, where they are in tenth place, with two points.>
THE GAME
From the beginning, Leão da Barra had chances in the home that welcomed them. With three poorly taken corners in a row, the red-and-black started the match nervously, and almost scored an own goal through the feet of newcomer Wellington Rato. Despite starting off on the wrong foot, it didn’t take long for the team to stabilize and organize the circumstances for the first goal.>
The score was opened in the 17th minute of the first half, with a throw from Ronald taken advantage of by Rato to hit Gustavo Mosquito’s head in the small area, who headed the ball into the back of the net. Over time, the rhythm of the red and black attack even decreased, but the slack was not taken advantage of by the opponent to create absolutely any play. It didn’t take long for Vitória’s energy to return with everything and culminate in the second goal, with a cross from Lucas Esteves in the small area resulting in Janderson’s shot in the 40th minute of the first half. >
At the end of the first half, the technical disparity between the two teams was clear, as they played a classic game of attack against defense – Vitória attacked with vigor, and Colo-Colo insisted on trying to survive. Pressing at all times, Leão left the field with the game in their hands, and the rival home in their intention. >
Upon returning to the second half, Colo-Colo brought a different energy to the locker room. Starting right away with two of their rare shots on goal, the team began to put more pressure on Vitória, but found a very attentive Lucas Arcanjo on the way. With the goal closed, Leão da Barra ensured that the opponent didn’t even dream of growing in the game, firing at the goal through the feet of Wellington Rato, voted man of the match, four minutes into the second half.>
It’s just not possible to say that it was due to a lack of will. With so much wanting and trying, Colo-Colo scored against Arcanjo in the 16th minute of the second half, reducing the difference in the score with a beautiful goal from Wesley with a strong individual shot straight into the back of the goal. From then on, there were some goal chances and several attempts against a very unfocused Vitória after the third goal, but none of them were converted.>
In the final stretch of the game, Leão had the chance to end the game with their own feet, when Carlos Eduardo picked up the ball from a high marking by Vitória and passed it to Fabri, who sent it straight into the back of the goal. If there was still any doubt, the final whistle to the sound of “Vitória, my love” that came shortly after marked the unquestionable certainty that the game was red and black, and that Vitória fans knew how to party even away from home.>
