Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vučevič announced on an extraordinary press conference on Tuesday that he is leaving his office. Vučevič was the Prime Minister for less than a year. From 2012 to 2022 he was the mayor of Novi Sad. According to Serbian media, TASR, including the B92 and RTS stations, reports this.

An unconditional decision

“It is my unconditional decision to withdraw,” Vučevič said. He promises to calm tension in society from this step. It still has to confirm the resignation of the Serbian Parliament, which has 30 days to name a new government or announce early elections.

The Novi Sada tragedy took place on November 1, November 2024. In Serbia, mass protests have been underway since students and teachers participate. Many Serbs associate the tragedy not only with insufficient construction supervision, but also with corruption.

Tuesday evening is scheduled for an extraordinary meeting of the Serbian government, which will also be attended by President Aleksandar Vučič, reported the daily telegraph. According to his information, this meeting will be discussed whether the new elections or the election of the new Prime Minister and the Government will be announced in the country.

A dozen of the accused

In connection with the fatal collapse of the shelter, more than a dozen people, including former transport Minister and Construction Goran Vesič, who resigned a few days after the accident, have already been accused. On Tuesday, in addition to Prime Minister Vučevič, the Mayor of Novi Sad Milan Djurič also resigned.

At the same time, thousands of demonstrators ended on Tuesday a 24-hour blockade of the main traffic intersection in Belgrade, trying to exhaust the pressure on the government.

In recent weeks, street demonstrations have marked several incidents, including when drivers hit twice into the crowd and caused injuries to two young women. On Tuesday, four men armed with baseball battles, who came out of the building of the ruling Serbian progressive party (CIS) in Novi Sad, attacked groups of students, seriously injuring one girl. The student ended up in the hospital. Severe injuries suffered several other students.

Given the growing pressure of demonstrators, President Vučič, Monday evening, spoke with a speech to a nation in which he defended the reaction of his reign to a tragedy in Novi Sad and promised to start dialogue with the demonstrators.
