Their general assembly today approved by a large majority statement describing “tangible, time limited and irreversible steps” towards a two -state solution between and before a meeting of leaders from around the world.

The seven -page statement is the result of an international conference held at the UN in July – hosts Saudi Arabia and France – on the long -standing conflict. The United States and Israel have been booming the event.

A decision to approve the statement received 142 votes in favor and 10 against 12 countries abstaining.

The Israeli prime minister insisted on Thursday that Israel would never accept a Palestinian state. Already three-quarters of the 193 UN member states recognize the state declared by the Palestinian leadership in 1988.

Germany and Italy remain the only major European countries to resist, although the Italian government is increasingly divided. Five European countries have banned imports from illegal Israeli settlements.

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the UN’s adoption of the New York statement, which aims to give a new impetus to the two states between Israel and the Palestinians, with the French president talking about a step in a “irreversible” way.

“Under the leadership of France and Saudi Arabia, 142 countries adopted New York’s statement to implement the solution of the two states,” the French president said.
