This number represents an increase in 2023, consolidating the region as one of the reference destinations for sea lovers.
The Algarve and the Blue Flag
The Blue Flag Program, promoted by the Blue Flag Association of Europe (Abae), certifies beaches, recreation ports and vessels that meet strict environmental, safety and service criteria. In 2024, Portugal reached a total of 440 flags, distributed between 398 beaches, 19 tour ports and 23 vessels. In the case of the Algarve, the distinction covers 86 coastal beaches, one of them being a reentry on the list – Patal Beach, in Lagos.

At national level, the Algarve remains the second region with the most blue flags, only surpassed by the North, which has 89 distinguished beaches. Among the Algarvios municipalities, Albufeira leads, with a total of 25 rewarded beaches. The list also includes the municipalities of Lagos, Aljezur, Tavira, Olhão, Faro and Vila Real de Santo António, each with four certified beaches, as well as Castro Marim, with three rewarded beaches, and Silves, with two.
Marinas also distinguished
In addition to the beaches, the Algarve saw four of its Marinas – Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Vilamoura – to be rewarded with the blue flag. This recognition reflects the commitment to the sustainability and quality of services offered to vessels and visitors.
