Brazilian journalists interested in studying abroad have several scholarships available, which fully or partially cover tuition and other costs, such as housing, health insurance and assistance for daily expenses.

Below we have listed 10 options for exchange and master’s degree programs with registrations available in the first half of 2025.

Joan Shorenstein Fellowship (Harvard University)

Journalists and researchers can run for Harvard Kennedy School’s scholarship in the United States. Fellows develop research on the influence of the media on public policy during a semester in the institution.

Knight-Bagehot Fellowship Program (Columbia University)

Economics and business reporters can apply for the Columbia University Faculty of College. The program aims to improve participants’ understanding of business, economy and finance.

Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship – MIT (Institute of Massachusetts Technology)

Women and non-binary journalists from around the world can compete for the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF). It is necessary to have proficiency in English and at least three years of experience in coverage of human rights and social justice topics.

The institution has not yet issued the notice for 2025, but the selection process usually begins between March and April. The program lasts six months and the scholarship covers life, health insurance, round trip air tickets and visa costs for participants outside the US.

Lemann Fellowship – (Lemann Foundation)

Journalists and professionals from other areas may run for Lemann Scholarship to graduate outside Brazil. The Foundation has a partnership with the Columbia University Faculty of Journalism.

According to the institution, most scholarships covers the costs of tuition. For extra costs, the value varies from case to case and is also defined by the university.

Black and/or indigenous Brazilian students approved in master’s and doctoral programs outside Brazil can also count on the Supplementary Scholarship, offered by the institution to cover extra expenses during the study period.
