We usually buy cheese for normal consumption in supermarkets, where we choose one of those wrapped in foil. But at home we should store it differently to endure as long as possible.
Whether we buy the cheese sealed directly from the manufacturer, or we buy the sliced at the counter, in most cases we bring it home wrapped in some kind of plastic. Although the cheese protects between production and sale, or between sale and unpacking the bag at home on the line, on the other hand, it is not suitable for longer -term care for such a delicacy. Without often realizing it, cheese is largely a living organism, and as such it must also be able to breathe. Therefore, let’s try to create better conditions.
How best to protect the cheese to endure as long as possible? For example, youtub video from Cheesesaver:

Special cheeses
For cheeses we can buy special fitted paper (or canvas), which would use even the biggest experts and gourmet. But it is uncertain that we will always have that at hand. But there is no need to despair, in domestic conditions we can still serve us quite ordinary baking paper, in which we can wrap the cheese without fear. This creates more than good conditions and hard cheese will last for many weeks without problems, the softer two to three weeks.
Protect the water
The problem we need to prevent is the drying of cheese. It is logical that the softer it is and thus it also contains a larger percentage of water, the more pronounced the process will be. The baking paper will largely prevent this process and the usability of a quality product will be significantly extended. But it will be necessary to work carefully and think at work.
It’s a little science
We should not save unnecessarily to wrap sometimes even quite expensive cheeses. So prepare a large piece of baking paper, in which you can comfortably wrap your favorite delicacy so that there is a tiny free space between the cheese and its cover. It allows “breathing” and air circulation, but does not allow drying. Store the cheese in the fridge in a space where a temperature can be expected to be around 5 ° C.
About the cheese take care of continuously
Although this method is quite reliable and we can believe in ensuring the durability of cheese, let us remember the need for occasional replacement of the packaging. Even baking paper can damp after a few days and thus lose its protective ability.
Soft cheeses want different care
The above -mentioned care procedure mainly concerns hard cheeses that we want to have in a few months, unless we consider them before. On the other hand, soft cheeses will feel much better in a glass or ceramic container with a lid. However, we cannot count on it will last longer than the date of the recommended consumption on the packaging. Products such as Hermelín and the like, ie those with noble mold, can be stored in the paper cover in which they are sold without remorse. In this case, manufacturers know what they are doing.
We would like to thank us and the descendants
The use of baking paper is not very expensive, but a very effective method of storing cheese. In addition, it is a more environmentally friendly variant of plastic packaging, for which they thank the next generation. Do you still think there is something to think about?
