Water storage rises in the Algarve, but the Well Basin remains critical

The amount of water stored rose in all watersheds in January compared to December, according to the National Water Resources Information System (Snirh).

Storage by watersheds were higher than January averages (1990/91 to 2023/24), except in the Mira, Ribeiras do Algarve and Arade basins, which, however, had an increase in retained water.

In the watershed of the Algarve Well, the amount of water rose from 12.6% in December to 15.4% in January. This basin continues to be the one with the lowest reserve.

Of the 60 monitored reservoirs, 33 have water availability greater than 80% of the total volume and eight less than 40%.

According to Snirh data available this Monday, with less water were in late January the Basins of the Well (15.4%), Arade (37.5%), Mira (39.4%) and Sado (58% ).

Ave and Tagus basins were those with the highest volume of water, with 98%and 89.6%, respectively, followed by the Douro (84.4%), Cávado (83%), Lima (81.9%), Guadiana (81.7%) Mondego (79.9%) and West (74.5%).

Each watershed can correspond more than one reservoir.

Last week, the Portuguese Environment Agency () indicated that the Algarve dams have 49% of their total water storage capacity after the rains of recent days, allowing to ensure water supply for more than one year .

Data sent to the Lusa Agency by the Portuguese Environment Agency also show that, at national level, the total storage capacity in the 80 reservoirs is at 77%.
