Tlaxcala, Mexico-Hundreds of Mexican soldiers were mobilized on Tuesday to the United States border as part of the agreement that, on the condition that the Latin American country represses fentanyl trafficking.
Mexican troops will be highlighted for critical points along the border with high illegal immigration rates and drug and weapons trafficking, including the border states of Baja California, Sonora and Tamaulipas, according to three military and government authorities with knowledge of the subject.
The plan to send 10,000 Mexican soldiers is part of an agreement announced on Monday, whereby US President Donald Trump suspended the threat of imposing 25% tariffs on Mexican imports. Mexico had promised to impose retaliatory tariffs.
According to the deal, the US also promised to work to stop the flow of high -power weapons for Mexico, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said.
Some analysts said the large concentration of Mexican troops on the border could leave other vulnerable areas of Mexico without proper security.
“The president had a weapon appointed to her head to make a decision like this,” said Andrés Sumano, a researcher at the North Border College of Mexico (Colef).

A trade war between Mexico and the US probably would have thrown the Latin country in recession, while US consumers would be hit at higher prices for Mexican imports such as cars and trucks.
