On the way to Portugal? Foreignon-diabery first seen in Spanish waters [vídeo]

An unprecedented event was registered off the coast of Tenerife, in Spain: for the first time, a black-diabeal fish (Melanocetus johnsonii) was observed alive near the surface in this region. This species of deep water, usually found between 200 and 2,000 meters deep, was sighted just two kilometers from San Juan beach, on January 26, 2025. The discovery aroused great interest among scientists, as it represents a rare and little understood phenomenon.

According to the newspaper, the marine biologist Laia Valor, from the NGO Condrik-Tenerife, participated in a shark study expedition when she noticed a black object floating in the water. As he approached, he realized that it was not plastic, but of a black diabol, a totally unexpected view so close to the surface. This was the first documented record of the living species in these conditions off Tenerife.

The investigation team observed the animal for several hours and was able to record images and videos of its behavior. Unfortunately, the fish had injuries and did not survive long after being found. However, the data collected may provide valuable information about the biology of this species and the factors that may have led to emerge to such unique waters.

Black-diabery is a inhabitant from the bottom of the sea, where he uses bioluminescence to attract prey. Its unusual appearance, characterized by a large mouth and sharp teeth, makes it often associated with its representation in the film Looking for Nemo. Sightings of this species are extremely rare, and even more unlikely is their presence so close to the surface.

Scientists suggest various explanations for this anommal behavior. Among the hypotheses raised are the possibility of illness, strong ocean currents or even the escape of a predator. Whatever the cause, the event represents a unique opportunity to study this species in a different context than usual.

The Canary Islands region is known for its marine biodiversity, but continues to surprise researchers with unexpected discoveries. This event reinforces the importance of continuous scientific exploitation, demonstrating that there is still much to learn about the inhabitants of the ocean and the factors that influence their behavior.

The impact of this discovery goes beyond the scientific community, also arousing the public’s interest in the seabed mysteries. The dissemination of events such as this helps to sensitize the need to protect marine ecosystems and conserve little known species.

Condrik-tenerife investigators will continue to analyze the records collected to try to understand what has led this fish to emerge. This information may be useful for future studies on environmental changes and their effects on deep water life.

Cases like this demonstrate the importance of scientific research and ocean conservation. The work of organizations such as Condrik-Tenerife allows us to deepen knowledge about the most different enigmatic species and reinforce the need to protect the marine environment for future generations.
