Twelve people had complications after participating in a cataract surgeriesat the Specialties Medical Outpatient Clinic (AME) of Taquaritinga, in the interior of São Paulo. According to the city hall, most patients who did the procedure were OPERATED EYE BLIND.
As determined by CNNthe procedures took place on October 21, 2024. However, the cases came to light this week.
The São Paulo State Secretariat of Health reported that the Araraquara Sanitary Surveillance Group made a technical visit at the Health Unit, along with the Municipal Health Surveillance. In the survey, inadequacies were identified in the Materials and Sterilization Room of the AME and the room was banned.
According to the state, the professionals who worked in the attendances were removed.
The victims are accompanied by a specialized committee of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School.
In a statement, the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) reported that, last Monday (3), one of the patients, a 66-year-old man, filed a non-criminal police report at the Santa Ernestina Police Station.
According to the folder, so far, this is the only report on the case. “The police authority investigates the facts and is available to other victims aiming at the proper clarification of the incident,” says the note.
Until the last update of this report, the exact number of patients who were blinded after surgery was not informed by the state. However, light and serious cases of surgical complications were recorded after the procedures.
