The opposition to the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) began a campaign against the Digital Currency under development by the Central Bank (BC).
Bolsonarist parliamentarians claim that the initiative will allow the full tracking of Brazilians’ financial movements, although the project was started under the management of former BC president Roberto Campos Neto, appointed by Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
On Tuesday (12), Deputy Julia Zanatta (PL-SC) launched a petition against Drex, claiming that digital currency would be a financial monitoring mechanism of the Lula government.
“With Drex, each move will be tracked, and you will just click to block your account or disappear with your features – whatever the excuse. We are talking about full control about your financial life! ”He wrote.
In addition to the campaign against Drex, Zanatta is the author of a bill that seeks to prohibit the extinction of role-moeda. The deputy also proposed a PEC (proposal for amendment to the Constitution) that would require authorization from the National Congress for the adoption of a digital currency in Brazil.
Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) endorsed the initiative, stating on social networks that Drex is the “new digital currency that Lula wants to create to dominate you”. He suggested, without evidence, that the government could restrict geolocation payments.
Continues after advertising
The movement occurs days after a wave of misinformation leads the government to retreat from a IRS standard that expanded to combat money laundering and evasion.
Former BC president Roberto Campos Neto has defended Drex, noting that technology will be “more innovative than Pix” and will improve the intermediation of financial assets.
The government published an official note at the end of January denying that Drex will replace the money in kind. “The initial version of Real Digital will be an additional option for banknotes use, but its impact on demand for paper-mow should not be relevant,” the statement says.
