The American teacher was arrested in August 2021 by the Russian authorities for trying to enter the country with medicinal cannabis. Asked about the terms of the exchange, Donald Trump said they were “very fair, very reasonable.”

The United States accepted the release of Russian Alexander Vinnik in exchange for American Marc Fogel, detained since 2021, revealed an American official on condition of anonymity.

Alexander Vinnik, an information technology expert, was extradited in August 2022 from Greece to the US, where he faced 21 accusations, including Identity theft, complicity in drug trafficking and money launderingthrough the BTC-e cryptocurrency exchange platform, closed in 2017.

On Tuesday, Kremlin reported that he had “negotiated an exchange” that showed “the goodwill of the Russians” and it signaled that it is “advancing in the right direction to end the terrible and violent war in Ukraine,” according to one Notice released on the occasion of the release of Marc Fogel.

Fogel, born in 1959, is an American teacher who was arrested in August 2021 by the Russian authorities for trying to enter the country with medicinal cannabis. The teacher had been sentenced to 14 years in prison in June 2022.

Asked about the terms of the exchange, Donald Trump said on Tuesday night that they were “very fair, very reasonable”.
