Russian customs officers detained an American citizen for “drug smuggling” at the Moscow airport. The man’s luggage reportedly found rubber candy with the admixture of cannabis derivative. TASR reports this according to Friday’s report by TASS.

An unnamed 28-year-old man was detained at Vnukov’s airport after arrival from Istanbul. “One of his suitcases attracted the attention of the service dog in the passage of customs,” Tass said, referring to the Russian Federal Customs Service.

The American claimed to be prescribed by a doctor in the US

“During the customs inspection, inspectors found two plastic containers and a zippered pocket in which candies were … Chemical analysis showed the presence of narcotic drugs from the cannabinoid group,” the customs report said. He needs a five to ten years of prison and a financial fine of $ 11,000.

Russia is detained by several US citizens, including the ballerina Ksenia Karelin, a retired English teacher Stephen Hubbard and a former US Marine Corps member Robert Gilman. The US’s previous government has accused Moscow of detaining US citizens on unsubstantiated allegations to use them in the future in negotiating and exchange prisoners, writes AFP.

Earlier this week, Russia released American teacher Marc Fogel as a convicted expert on cryptocurrencies Alexander Vinnik. This was the first exchange of prisoners between Washington and Moscow since August last year.
