Researchers have discovered a new type of brain cells in mice that are very possibly also in our brain and can help regulate eating habits.
These cells, located in the dorsal nucleus of the rafe, part of the brain trunk, seem to play a fundamental role in signaling When the body has eaten enough.
The study published in, led by Alexander Nectow From Columbia University, it focused on understanding the way the brain detects and responds to various food-related signs.
Using molecular profiles, researchers identified cells in the dorsal rafe nucleus that produce a hormone called cholecystokinin (CCK), known for regulating appetite. It was found that these neurons became active whenever the rats ateresponding to sensory signs such as the vision, the smell and taste of food, as well as the sensations in the gut.
The team used an optogenetic technique to manipulate these neurons, activating them with light. When the neurons were activated, the rats slowed their diet And with stronger activation, they stopped eating – results that suggest that these neurons are directly involved in brain signaling to interrupt food intake.
Given the similarities between the brain structures of rats and humans, Nectow believes that humans must have similar neurons and that the discovery can open the way to new, revolutionary treatments for obesity.
The team also found that neurons can be activated by a medicine called LPG-1 agonist, used in the treatment of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
Medicines such as Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) can be potentially combined with this method to more effectively control eating habits and promote weight loss.
Experts in this area consulted by, as Jeff Davies at the University of Swansea, consider that this is an important step in understanding the role of the brain in eating behavior.
