Magnitude 3,1 -recorded earthquake at 60 km south of Olhão

The earthquake recorded this Monday with epicenter in Seixal, Setúbal district, was felt with maximum intensity in Sintra (Lisbon) and Almada (Setúbal) and with less intensity in some municipalities from the Centro region to the Algarve, revealed the IPMA.

According to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the magnitude 4.7 earthquake on the Richter scale registered Monday at 13:24, with epicenter about 14 kilometers southwestern Seixal, “until At the moment, it did not cause personal or material damage and was felt with maximum intensity V (modified Mercalli scale) in the municipalities of Sintra (Lisbon) and Almada (Setúbal) ”.

“It was also felt with less intensity in the municipalities of Odemira (Beja), Coimbra (Coimbra), Albufeira, Portimão (Faro), Alcobaça, Leiria (Leiria), Cascais, Lisbon, Loures, Mafra, Oeiras, Vila Franca de Xira, Amadora , Odivelas (Lisbon), Abrantes (Santarém), Barreiro, Moita, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra, Setúbal and Sines (Setúbal), ”said the IPMA in a statement released at 14:11.

Although this earthquake has been felt in some municipalities from the Centro region to the Algarve, “so far, the maximum intensity observed was V (modified Mercalli scale)”, explained the IPMA, saying that if the situation justifies it, new ones will be issued, will be issued communicated.

The intensity V on the modified Mercalli scale means that the earthquake has been “perceptible abroad” and may still have the fall of small objects and people to wake up if they are sleeping.

The modified Mercalli scale ranges from 1 to 12 points and is a qualitative scale used to determine the intensity of an earthquake from its effects on people and on constructed and natural structures.

Initially, the Euro-Mediterranean seismological center indicated that the shake had had a 5.0 magnitude on the Richter scale.

In a statement sent at 13:47, the IPMA reported that this Monday at 13:24 “was registered at the seismic network stations of the continent, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake (Richter) and whose epicenter was located at 14 km west of Seixal ”.

In a warning message to the population, sent at 1:55 pm, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (Anepc) reported that “confirms an earthquake at 13:24 with epicenter at sea, near the tile source [na Península de Setúbal]estimated magnitude of 4.7 ”on the Richter scale.

“No damage to the time. Keep calm and be aware of any replicas. If you are justified we will issue new information, ”said Anepc.

According to the Richter scale, the earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2,0-2,9), small (3,0-3,9), light (4 , 0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9 ), exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when greater than 10).
