Deputies of the NA bench filed on Tuesday (18) a bill with the objective of curbing price manipulation through food disposal.

The text, by the deputy, is also signed by the deputies, Luciene Cavalcanti and Pastor Henrique Vieira.

Parliamentarians claim that price manipulation through food disposal is a common practice when prices of a particular product become lower due to excess supply. Given this, producers play out of surplus to increase market prices and maximize profits, argue.

The authors ask for a fine of up to 10% of companies’ annual gross revenues and, in case of recurrence or “when proven that food disposal has occurred with the purpose of price manipulation or profit maximization”, imprisonment of 1 to 3 years .

The proposal also provides that the Government, through the Ministries of Social Development (MDS) and Agrarian Development (MDA), enables companies to supervise and training programs to food donation to public food safety and hunger security initiatives.

“This measure aligns with the objectives of reducing food waste, combating hunger and social inequality, and encouraging the more sustainable and socially responsible practices,” says the project justification.
